Tiger Moth Wall Hanging
The Tiger Moth Wall Hanging was inspired by a moth that lives only 2 short weeks in the adult winged form. A few years ago I spotted one of the usually nocturnal moths in my flower bed in Texas, and have long remembered my excitement at seeing such a spectacular creature.
The Tiger Moth re-flew into my mind’s eye recently, so here you have her recreated as a 5 foot wall hanging. The photos outline the intricate, time consuming process of crocheting the art piece, from my first sketch, to proportional pattern blowup, then to the crocheted winged parts I put together like puzzle pieces.
I hand dyed wool and cotton yarns, and transformed the moth idea from her 3 inch size to a wall hanging with a wingspan of 60 inches. The Tiger Moth, a one of a kind piece, was awarded first prize in the fiber category at the Cody Country Art League Show
